Slow cookers or crock-pots are a brilliant invention, cheap to use and brilliant for easy midweek dinners.

My slow-cooked pork steaks in a rich and tangy BBQ sauce melt in the mouth - just the thing to come home to after a long day at work.

Now, I suppose you could serve this with some nice crusty bread for dipping and mopping, but for the ultimate comfort food, it needs mashed potatoes. 😋

Ingredients in this recipe

  • pork loin steaks
  • onion
  • celery
  • mushrooms
  • tinned chopped tomatoes
  • vegetable oil
  • Optional - see note below McDougalls Thickening Granules

BBQ sauce

  • 200ml boiling water
  • 1 x beef OXO cube (for this recipe, OXO works best)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree (paste if you're in the US)
  • 1 tablespoon of malt vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of Colman's English mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of soft brown sugar

How to make it - Full instructions in the printable recipe card below

Heat a little oil in a frying pan and add the pork steaks in 2 or 3 at a time and sear quickly. Remove and pop them into the slow cooker.

Only add the pork if you're planning on turning the slow cooker on straight away. Leaving pork or any meat or poultry in a warm sauce is never a good idea. 😐

Cook the onions and celery over medium heat, stirring until they’re lightly browned, then transfer them to the slow cooker.

Add the mushrooms and tomatoes to the slow cooker, then pour in the sauce you prepared earlier. Stir everything together, set the slow cooker to LOW, and let it cook for 7 to 8 hours.

Kids will love this! You could always serve it with roast potatoes instead of mashed potatoes and add some broccoli to make it go even further.

How do you Thicken Sauce in a Slow Cooker?

When cooking in a slow cooker or crock-pot, you’ll often end up with more liquid than if you made the same dish in the oven. To finish it off, you’ll need to thicken the dish before serving.

You can always use a bit of cornflour dissolved in a small amount of water. Regular flour will taste raw and is likely to form lumps.

Now, I say the way to go is with McDougalls Thickening Granules - seriously, they are most marvellous! Just stir a tablespoon or so into your finished dish, and they dissolve easily with not a lump in sight.

Buying a Slow Cooker

You can pick up a slow cooker for as little as £15 in stores like ALDI, but it’s worth spending a bit more on one that lets you sear food directly, saving you from using a separate frying pan.

A frying pan means more washing up! So I recommend a slow cooker with a sear function. But a bit more money will get you a slow cooker with an automatic 'keep warm' function too.

Slow Cooker BBQ Pork Steaks

Slow cooker BBQ pork recipe - tasty and easy to make.

Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 7 HourTotal time: 7 H & 10 M

Ingredients

  • a little vegetable oil
  • 8 nice lean pork loin steaks - trimmed of any fat
  • 1 large white onion - peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 sticks of celery - ribs removed and sliced
  • a few brown mushrooms - sliced
  • 1 x 400g tin of good-quality chopped tomatoes
  • Optional, although you will need to thicken it as slow-cookers tend to produce more liquid, I use McDougalls Thickening Granules.
In a jug mix together the following:
  • 200ml boiling water
  • 1 x beef OXO cube (for this recipe, OXO works best)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree (paste if you're in the US)
  • 1 tablespoon of malt vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of Colman's English mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of soft brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat a large frying pan and add a splash of oil. Put the pork steaks in 2 or 3 at a time and sear quickly. Remove and put them into the slow cooker. *Important* If you are not planning on switching on your slow cooker straight away, do not add the pork until you are ready. Leaving pork or any meat or poultry in a warm sauce is never a good idea.
  2. Don't bother washing the frying pan; add the onions and celery and cook over medium heat, stirring until they colour slightly, then add them to the slow cooker.
  3. Throw the mushrooms and the tinned tomatoes (including their juice) into the slow cooker and pour over the sauce.
  4. Give everything a good stir, set your slow cooker to LOW, and let it cook for 7 to 8 hours.

    1. Hi Anon, so sorry I will correct this first thing in the morning - it should have read (in step 4)
'Don't bother washing the pan, add the onions and celery and cook over medium heat stirring until they colour slightly and add those to the slow cooker along with the tomatoes'!!!
So what you did is perfectly fine - thanks for pointing this out.
