And, it's on the table in just 20 minutes!

What is Dulce de Leche?

Dulce de leche is a confection from Latin America prepared by slowly heating sweetened milk to create a substance that derives its flavour from the Maillard reaction, also changing colour.

Dulce de leche is Spanish for "Sweet [made] of milk". dulce de leche is known as 'manjar de leche or just 'manjar.

Top Tip!

You might notice a strange ingredient in the recipe. 😉 Lemon juice.

Dipping the banana slices in lemon juice will stop them from going brown.

It is quite expensive, though, so I can recommend an alternative: Carnation Caramel, it still tastes amazing, and I have used it a few times when making Dulce de Leche filled Muffins.

Anyway, both are available in any good supermarket.

Ready-made pizza base

I can't recommend these pizza bases from Marks and Spencer enough!

They're sold in packs of 2, and you'll find them in the food hall, usually on the grocery counter, somewhere near the rice and pasta.

They're lovely and soft, and don't look too ready-made if you know what I mean.

Of course, any readymade pizza base will work.

Ingredients

  • 1 x soft shop-bought pizza base - I used Marks and Spencer's
  • 2 bananas - sliced
  • 1 lemon - juice only (to stop the bananas from going brown)
  • about 8 squares of dark chocolate - melted

Other dessert pizza ideas

  • Fresh strawberries and white chocolate 😋
  • Nutella and fresh strawberries
  • Raspberry coulis and white chocolate
  • Nutella mini, marshmallows, raspberry coulis, and chopped toasted hazelnuts
  • Beat cream cheese, a little caster sugar and a good pinch of cinnamon, top with bananas, toffee sauce and chopped pecan nuts
  • Whipped cream, top with chocolate chips and broken Oreo cookies, and drizzle with melted white chocolate

Chocolate Pizza Recipe with Caramel and Banana

This is quite rich, so this recipe will easily serve 4. Serve it as is or with ice cream.

Prep time: 5 MinCook time: 15 MinTotal time: 20 Min

Ingredients

  • 1 x soft, shop-bought, ready-made pizza base
  • a jar of Dulce de Leche (I used Merchant Gourmet), you won't need to use the whole jar, so it's an excuse to make more pizzas!
  • 2 bananas - sliced
  • 1 lemon - juice only (to stop the bananas from going brown)
  • about 8 squares of dark chocolate - melted

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 200°C /400°F or Gas 6
  1. Put the pizza base onto a baking tray or pizza stone and brush it around the edge with water. Sprinkle the edge only with a little bit of caster sugar.
  2. Cook the pizza base for about 15 minutes WITHOUT adding any topping.
  3. Meanwhile, squeeze the juice from a lemon into a shallow dish. Add a couple of slices to the dish, turning to coat, then remove from the juice and transfer to a plate as you go; do a couple at a time. *If you don't use lemon juice, your bananas will go brown almost instantly.
  4. Once the pizza has cooked and is golden around the edge, remove it from the oven. Put it onto a wire rack and allow it to cool slightly.
  5. Spread the Dulce de Leche over the pizza, leaving the golden edge of the pizza on show. Arrange the sliced bananas over the caramel.
  6. Melt the chocolate and, using a fork, dip it in and drizzle over the pizza using a side-to-side motion from a little height; that's the best way to get a nice-looking covering of chocolate.
  7. Eat while the pizza is still nice and warm. Serve it as is or with ice cream.
