Ingredients to make 2 pastries

  • 320g pack of ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 4 slices of ham - I used serrano ham
  • 4 slices of cheese each cut in half - I used smoky cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg yolk - lightly beaten

What is serrano ham?

Jamón is a kind of dry-cured ham produced in Spain and is one of the most globally recognized food items of Spanish cuisine.

Most jamón is commonly called jamón serrano in Spain. Jamón is the Spanish word for ham.

How to make cheese and ham puff pastries

Now, since ready-rolled pastry is sold in an oblong shape and for this you need squares, you will have to cut it. So cut 2 squares (or 1 square if you only want to make one).

You will have a bit of pastry leftover but don't be tempted to roll it because if you do the puff pastry will lose its puff!

That's right, it really will, so rather than waste it you could make cheese straws.

Place a slice of ham at a diagonal and then add 2 slices of cheese (that you cut into halves) followed by another slice of ham and 2 more slices of cheese.

Brush just the lefthand corner with egg yolk and fold the right-hand side of the pastry over to cover the cheese and ham filling.

Now bring the left-hand side over the right side and brush with the egg making sure you go right down the sides of the pastry.

Repeat the above to make the second pastry.

Pop them onto a baking non-stick baking sheet or use kitchen foil to line one. I always, always use BacoFoil non-stick kitchen foil because it really is non-stick.
