Gousto Food Boxes - do the recipes really work?

There are a few online recipe box delivery people out there and I've tried many of them.  But when it comes to the actual recipes I say Gousto have nailed it.  I'm really not meaning to sound like an advert, I'm just saying.  I once joined in a 'Cookalong' with Toshiba and Gousto and their Persian Halloumi recipe has been made loads ever since in this house.

You know how it is, you see a recipe in a book and have a go at making it but most times it never actually looks quite the same as the picture in the book; well they don't for me anyway!  But I've found Gousto recipes really do work and yes these are my own photos and I can tell you they turned out the same as the picture supplied on the recipe card in the box.  Be sure to keep reading this post as I have a special DISCOUNT code for my readers 😃

This Curried Chicken with Sultana Rice with Indian Carrot Slaw was really easy to make as was the other recipe in the box; Chicken Red Pepper and Lemongrass Curry.  More importantly they were both were really tasty too. We especially liked the first one with the Indian carrot slaw 😋

Gousto deliver recipes boxes of 2 meals for either 2 or 4 people. Everything in the box was nice and fresh.  Dry ingredients for your chosen recipes are all measured out all you need to do is peel some veg, chop or grate and follow the recipe card supplied.

Luxury Chocolate Delivery from Heartier - Review

Heartier is an online marketplace that until fairly recently were known as Market Porter.
Having made a great success of their fantastic meat delivery service, Stefan Porter and Nick Ford have now added more products hence the name change.  Of course they continue their ethos of traceable, ethically produced British meats into other products; Cheese, Charcuterie and now......Chocolate!

Above image kindly provided by Heartier

Chocolate is delivered in letterbox sized packaging meaning so there's no need to be home in order to receive it; in fact the same goes for anything ordered from Heartier.

Heartier says;
Meat boxes will be with you within 24 hours of packing, but should there be a rare but unavoidable delay and your box cannot be delivered until the next day, due to the brilliantly designed packaging the contents will be safe and cool for at least 48 hours which ensures that your meat will be fresh as a daisy the next day too.

Back to the Chocolate!
Whether you are after the most exclusive chocolate from around the world, something a little more accessible, or the best of both, Market Porter has it covered.  Quite literally they go to the ends of the earth to find your chocolate each month.  You can buy by the bar, or pick one of our selection boxes as a one off or subscription.

There are many, many small scale producers, all sourcing top quality beans direct from the farmers themselves and turning them into the most amazing chocolate.  If you're looking for the most premium single origin bars on the market or something a little different, you'll definitely find it over at Market Porter.  You can read more about Chocolate from Market Porter by clicking on the link.

Taste
My 'Posh Chocolate Selection' box arrived very well packaged in a sturdy but slim letterbox sized cardboard box.  Inside the selection box for the month of May was 4 Luxury Chocolate bars:

Rose Pale by Amelia Rope
Pistachio and Sea Salt White also by Amelia Rope
Fig and Orange 70% Dark by Ocelot
46% Milk Chocolate and Crushed Coffee by The Chocolate Society

Best before dates:
All four bars delivered to me had a good best before dates which with the earliest being almost 3 months away so no worries there.

Now, readers of this blog will know that I can't ever get too excited about chocolate, so that's where Paul (the husband) comes in; he is the chief taster of all things chocolate that arrive here at A Glug of Oil.

Paul - 'Did someone say CHOCOLATE'?.......I guess it's over to him for this bit!

Rose Pale
Now he wasn't too sure he would like this one since he thought the rose might make the chocolate taste a bit odd.  But this isn't the case at all.  The chocolate is so smooth it melts in your mouth and although it does does have a floral taste about it, it really isn't over powering.

Pistachio and Sea Salt White
Creamy tasting smooth white chocolate with just the right amount of pistachios and saltiness.  Oh yes this is really good stuff.

Fig and Orange 70% Dark
Whoa!! Dark and rich tasting chocolate is in Paul's opinion the best.  Dark chocolate and orange is always going to be a good match.  But the added chewiness of the fig along with the fragrance of orange oil make this stand out from any other chocolate and orange bar he's ever tasted.

46% Milk Chocolate and Crushed Coffee
Again, lovely creamy tasting chocolate with the right amount of coffee flavour.  All in all each and every bar has a big fat YES from Paul.

So, if you're a lover of chocolate or would just like to send a gift to someone you know then do check out Heartier.  Don't forget Heatier isn't just about Chocolate; there's also has an absolutely fantastic range of Fresh Meat and Poultry products along with Cheese and Charcuterie.

Disclosure:  I received the Posh Chocolate selection box to review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.  I was not required to write anything positive.

Riverford Organic Farms - The Happy Pear Recipe Box Review

Riverford Organic Farms have recently launched some really special recipe boxes with new guest chefs, The Happy Pear.  The Irish twins, David and Steven Flynn, are part of Jamie Oliver’s FoodTube, and, like Riverford they have a mission to get people to eat more veg.

I was asked to give an honest and frank review of one of these boxes so here we go.
This Spanish Chickpea and Potato Bake was one of  three recipes included in my box and I have to say it was totally and utterly delicious.  The recipe was for 2 people and the portion size was quite huge, now since we're both greedy people that's saying something coming from me.

The Apple, Beetroot Salad with Pumpkin and Sunflower Seeds that was a side dish for the potato bake not only looked good, but tasted good too.   The simple dressing for the salad was olive oil, balsamic vinegar and honey and complimented the salad nicely.

A roundup of new and exciting food related products that I've been lucky enough to receive this past month - please note they are listed in no particular order.

The Carnivore Club

This is British Charcuterie at it's best; each box delivered to your door from Carnivore Club contains between 4-6 handcrafted cured meats from top artisans.
Our box arrived in perfect condition and the contents were from Deli Farm Charcuterie in Cornwall.  Our box contained Sliced Coppa, Spicy Chorizo, Pancetta, Devil's Poker (a spicy salami stick) Garlic Salami and Coppa Chops.

I must say we're really impressed with the whole thing from the packaging, delivery and quality of the meats.  The Carnivore Club is a great way to try many different cured meat products and also to learn about them too.  A really helpful booklet is included in each box and explains more about the supplier and the products included in the box.

The grapes for the 2013 i heart Pinot Grigio were sourced from all over Hungary.  This is a fresh, crisp, dry white wine.  Delicate citrus aromas and lemon and lime flavours, with great balance and freshness on the palate.  Best served chilled - a great match for grilled white fish, seafood salads, chicken dishes or simply on its own.

Cheese and Wine Hamper Review - Serenata Flowers

Serenata Flowers are an online gift delivery company and they have a lot more than just flowers to offer.  You can send chocolates, wine, cheese and wine hampers, beer and ale, fine food, picnic hampers and also plants; hanging baskets, tubs of flowers or even a mini olive tree.  The list is huge and they even have hampers to welcome the arrival of a baby.

Having been sent this Bordeaux and Artisan Cheese Selection hamper to review I must say at £39.99 value for money it's not bad considering next (weekday) delivery is included in the price.  Each gift comes with a gift card and of course when ordering you add a message which is printed on the card.

Contents;
  • Hand Waxed Black Berries & Apple Cheese 170g
  • Hand Waxed Scrumpy & Crunchy Apple 170g
  • Hand Waxed Worcestershire Gold Mature Cheddar 170g
  • Black Olive Cracker for White Wine 125g
  • Morrocan Spice Crackers for Red Wine 125g
  • Grangeneuve Bordeaux, Red
The hamper was well packaged and had more packaging than is shown above; I had to remove it in order to take a photo.  After ordering the hamper arrived the very next day, as with most companies Serenata don't deliver on a Sunday.  All in all I can't think of any reason why anyone that drinks wine and likes cheese wouldn't want to receive this hamper; we certainly enjoyed sampling it!

Find out more by popping over to Serenata Flowers.

Persian Halloumi Cookalong with Toshiba and Gousto

Recently myself and a few other bloggers were invited by Toshiba and Gousto to take part in the #ToshibaCookalong via Skype.

To take part we were all sent a box of ingredients from Gousto and a Toshiba Satellite Radius 11 laptop and very nice it is too, more about that in a minute!
We all had to link up via Skype to cook-along with Gousto's talented Chef, Alice Feaver and follow her recipe for Persian Halloumi.

It's a shame I didn't get any pictures of the actual cookalong (apart from one I shared via FaceBook and Twitter) as I was too busy worrying about how it would go since I'd never taken part in a cookalong before!

All set with the Toshiba laptop and ingredients at the ready when 6pm came we were off.  The cookalong was great fun despite a couple of us loosing connection at one point.  But with the recipe to hand I carried on regardless and hoped for the best.  Once the connection back up and running I had pretty much managed to keep up with everyone apart from my onions; yes my onions could have done with being cooked a little longer to caramelise but hey ho the finished dish not only looked good but it tasted good too.

The Toshiba Satellite Radius 11 is fantastic, especially for use in the kitchen since when in tablet mode it isn't much bigger that a large cookbook.  To be honest I rarely use cookbooks as I often look up recipes on the net and as the Toshiba Radius has touchscreen it's brilliant for scrolling through recipes.

Another thing; it's also great for watching catch up TV - we have a smart TV in our kitchen but not all channels (that I want to watch) are available catch up purely because the manufacturer of the TV doesn't support them.  However all is not lost as the Toshiba Satellite Radius is WiDi enabled (wireless display) this means you can project what's showing on the laptop screen onto your TV screen pretty marvelous ah?  So, as you can see I'm full of knowledge (lol) and I can now watch anything I fancy whilst cooking!

The Toshiba Radius flips round to enable laptop, tabletop, presentation, audience and tablet this laptop is absolutely perfect for Skype.  It's fast too and great for writing my blog and editing photos as it has 500GB hard drive for storage and 32GB of cloud storage.

Persian Halloumi - recipe by Gousto

To serve 2 you will need;
250g halloumi cheese
150g bulgur wheat
2 red onions
20g dried barberries
1 tbsp pomegranate molasses
10g fresh mint
1 tbsp ras el hanout
1 lemon
1 tsp black pepper
olive oil
salt and black pepper to season

How to do it;
Boil a kettle. Add the bulgur to a pot with 275 ml of boiling water, cover with a lid over a medium-low heat.
Simmer for 5-7 min or until almost all the water is absorbed.  Remove and set aside with the lid on for 10 min, until dry and fluffy .

Meanwhile, put the barberries in a small bowl and add 100 ml of hot water, add 1 tbsp of sugar and mix well.

Peel the onions, cut them in half and slice finely.  Chop the mint finely and grate the zest of the lemon.
Cut the halloumi into thin slices (approx. 1cm thick)

Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the halloumi.  Combine half the ras el hanout with 1 tsp of black pepper for the spice mix. Coat the halloumi in the spice mix.

Add 1-2 tbsp of olive oil to a large pan on a medium-high heat.  Once the oil is hot, add the onion and cook for 4-5 min or until soft and lightly caramelised.

Add 3 tbsp of the barberry water to the bulgur wheat - now drain the barberries and add to the bulgur wheat.
Combine the barberry bulgur with the mint, lemon zest, remaining ras el hanout, pomegranate molasses and 1-2 tbsp of olive oil.  Season to your taste with salt and pepper.

Push the onion to one side of the pan and add 1-2 tbsp of olive oil.  Add the halloumi and cook for 1-2 min on each side or until golden all over.
Serve the bulgur wheat with the onion and halloumi and enjoy.

UFUUD Premium Italian Food Delivery to UK and Europe - Review

I was recently asked if I'd like to place an order with Ufuud (an online Italian food ordering company) to review their ordering system and delivery to the UK.
Now we're talking proper premium Italian food that is not only delivered to Italy but can also be shipped to places all over Europe from Milan.

I was in my element browsing through the Ufuud website looking at all the beautiful foods and the product packaging just cries out 'buy me'!  I mean seriously, look at the lovely products - I can't wait to try them all.  Pasta of all shapes and some you can't buy over here in the UK.

Donald Russell Delivery and an Interactive Turkey Guide

Donald Russell is well known for it's great quality meat, poultry and seafood but also their extensive range of other fantastic foods too.  In fact Donald Russell the butcher has a Royal Warrant to supply gourmet meat to Buckingham Palace.  Ordering from them is easy online or you can also order by phone, email or fax.

Quality:
I was recently sent a Free Range Turkey Crown along with some Pigs in Blankets.  Turkeys from Donald Russell  are Free-Range turkeys, from the Loué farmers of France.  Slow-grown turkey fed on natural cereal-based diet.  The great thing with a turkey crown is there isn't any waste - if you're not keen on drumsticks (dark meat) then a turkey crown is the way to go.  A crown is also really easy to carve too.

Giveaway - Case of Beer

I must admit I'd not heard of Beer52 until a week or so ago when I was asked if I'd like a case of their beers to try.  Well, I have to say I'm more a wine than beer kinda gal so the beer tasting was left to Paul (the husband).  As you can imagine he was really pleased with this role of chief beer taster and is making his way through all eight beers, so far he's really liked every one of them, I think he has three more to go.

Anyway, I've since discovered that Beer52 are the largest and fastest-growing craft beer community in the world - which is pretty impressive.

Their founder James Brown started the club last year after he went on a motorcycle 'craft beer road trip' around Europe.  He discovered there were more than 12,000 microbreweries in the world, producing all kinds of amazing beers.  After that trip, he put together a team of craft beer experts who now handpick eight different beers each month for our members to try.  They're sourcing exclusive, small batch beers from the best tiny and experimental breweries around the world and if you order the beer is delivered right to your door.

Beer52 also produce a great in-house magazine about the beers we feature called Ferment.

Discount Code:
If you pop over to their website and want to order a case of beer to try please enter this Discount Code Jan10 to receive £10 off your first order!  Don't forget you can have the beer sent as a gift.  Brilliant with Christmas soon upon us and you'll save a tenner too!

Cajun Chicken - Gousto Recipe Box Review

In case you didn't know Gousto deliver fresh food recipe boxes directly to your door and each box contains everything you need to make the recipe and includes a really easy to follow recipe card.
Having just been sent three meals each serving four people one of the meals was this Cajun Chicken with Couscous.
Now, I must say this really was delicious - the chicken was nicely spiced and the couscous and yogurt dressing complimented the meal perfectly.

Since I last wrote about Gousto a while back they have lowered their prices by 17% and now meals cost between  £4.00 to £5.80 and that included delivery.
According to MoneySupermarket.com on average that's 16% better than most supermarkets.
Gousto have worked very hard on these improvements, and have happily passed on all the savings to the customer.

Meat Box Delivery from Heartier - Review

There's nothing quite like a good sized English Breakfast to keep you full pretty much all day long.
Of course good quality ingredients are essential.  Proper bacon (smoked back bacon is the only way to go in my opinion) and nicely seasoned meaty sausages  - both have to be just right.

Okay that's the meat sorted so now for the mushrooms, I love these baby portobello mushrooms.  A nice big tomato is essential, baked beans are good too and any leftover cooked potatoes are perfect - just fry them till they start to brown along with the rest of the breakfast.  Another essential is a lovely golden yolked fried egg or two.  Pop some fresh crusty buttered bread on the side of the plate and you're done.

Having recently been sent a rather nice box of meat from Market Porter (since writing they are now known as Heartier), a full English breakfast just had to happen.

Wine Collection Hamper from Harrods - Review

I was recently asked if I'd like to review a hamper from Harrods.  I chose this lovely Seasonal Wine Collection Hamper containing a mixture of red, white and rose wines.  Just as you would expect from Harrods, the hamper arrived in perfect condition and I must say the packaging is impressive - it looks so good I don't want to throw the box away!

Inside the outer 'Harrods' box was the hamper box itself, the two gold coloured ropes made the hamper easy to pull out.
All six bottles of wine were very well protected, encased in molded polystyrene and there was a Harrods Corkscrew too.

What about the wines?
Since I'm most certainly not an expert on wine at all, I've taken the text taken from Harrods website to give you more of an idea about each wine than I could.  One quick word though before ordering - since this is a seasonal collection of wines, you may want to check as the contents may vary from those listed below.

*Nadaria Syrah:  An impressive wine displaying plum and damson combined with hints of blackberry bush and leather.

Aliança, Quinta da Garrida Reserva:  Combining classic Portuguese characters with modern wine-making, the 2007 has juicy black cherry appeal.

*Gouguenheim Pinot Noir:  A high quality wine from a unique terroir in the Andes foothills of Argentina.

*Borsao Selección Blanco Campo de Borja:  Possesses a yellow straw colouring with powerful aromas of citric and tropical fruits. 75cl.

*Aotea Nelson Sauvignon Blanc:  With lovely fruit characters, the 2011 Aoetea Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and refreshing with a clean finish.

*Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvedre Rosé: A beautifully dry, mineral and firm wine.

This Seasonal Wine Collection Hamper along with a fantastic range of food and wine hampers including gift boxes to suit all occasions and budgets are available from £19.95 to £2,000

Disclaimer:  Many thanks to Harrods for sending me The Seasonal Wine Collection.  All thoughts are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Restaurant Quality Food - Delivered to your Door - Review

If you hadn't noticed, I absolutely love food and cooking!  But of course, there are many people who either don't have the interest, or are simply too busy and can't spare the time to cook.

So if you are one of those people and would like to hold a dinner party, how about trying my choice (for the main course) Parmesan, Pancetta and Spinach Stuffed Chicken with a side of Dauphinoise Potatoes - without the bother of having to actually make it - sounds good?
Then read on!

Before I go on, I noticed that Free Range Eggs were always used in their food.  If they wasn't, I would have turned down the chance of this review.

More More More are an online company based in Newcastle (UK) and they deliver home-cooked food straight to your door.  Either your everyday meals or a fancy dinner party feast can be delivered, leaving you very little to do apart from pop it in the oven and take it to the table when it's done.

So, for my review I could place an order of 'home-cooked quality food' and have it delivered to my door.  Even though I don't have a problem cooking myself (in fact if we hold a dinner party I'm in my element) I even love the stress part but this still sounded good, so how did it go?
