Quorn Chinese-style Spicy Beef with Peppers

I must say Quorn frozen beef strips are easy to cook, but in my opinion, actually taste more like tofu rather than beef.

But with that said, personally I much prefer the Quorn beef than the chicken, as I find the chicken a bit dry.

Although we're not vegetarians it is sometimes good to have a meat-free dinner. In any case, Quorn is super quick to cook, low in calories and high in protein.

This dish can be on the table in a matter of minutes and since you cook the beef strips from frozen my recipe really is a doddle to make and is really tasty.

What is Quorn?

Quorn is a meat substitute product originating in the UK and sold primarily in Europe, but is available in 18 countries. Quorn is sold as both a cooking ingredient and as the meat substitute used in a range of prepackaged meals. Source Quorn Foods.

To cook all you need is a large frying pan, but ideally, a decent Pre-seasoned Cast Iron Wok will work best.

Unlike a regular frying pan, cast iron gets really hot very quickly, and you'll find vegetables such as peppers and onions are perfectly cooked in a flash whilst retaining a slight crunchiness.

Why does a Wok need to be Seasoned?

Seasoning your cast iron or carbon steel wok creates a protective coating inside of the pan. Every time you cook with oil, the coating becomes thicker and heavier and creates a natural, non-stick cooking surface.

Spicy Beef with Peppers

Ingredients

Vegetable oil
250g Quorn frozen steak strips
1 red bell pepper – cut into bite-sized pieces
1 green bell pepper – cut into bite-sized pieces
1 large onion – peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
1 clove of garlic very finely chopped
Root ginger – peeled and very finely chopped to make just half a teaspoon
4 spring onions – trimmed and sliced
A good pinch of chilli flakes

For the sauce
2 tablespoons cornflour
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
2 and a half tablespoons of Ketjap Manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce)
1 and a half tablespoons of Shaohsing (rice wine)
A good pinch of white pepper
1 and a half tablespoons of sesame oil
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons water

Method

Prepare the vegetables and set them aside. Make the sauce simply by mixing together all of the sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.

Heat up a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok and over high heat; stir-fry the Quorn beef strips for about 5 minutes.

Now add in the peppers, onions, spring onions, garlic, and ginger and continue to stir-fry for about 5 minutes. Add the chilli flakes and the sauce mixture.

Stir-fry for another couple of minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly and coats the Quorn strips and vegetables. Serve straight away with rice or noodles.

  1. Such a vibrant coloured meal, and the Quorn really does look like meat! I haven't had Quorn in years - I must try it again.
