Bacon cheeseburgers are a popular and delicious type of hamburger that features the addition of crispy bacon and melted cheese, typically served on a bun. They are a classic American dish and are widely enjoyed in many parts of the world.

The main components of a bacon cheeseburger are ground beef, bacon, cheese, and various toppings and condiments. Here's a breakdown of the key ingredients:

Ground beef: The patty is typically made from ground beef, often seasoned with salt, pepper, and other spices. The beef is formed into a round shape and then cooked on a grill, stovetop, or griddle.

Bacon: Crispy bacon is a quintessential element of a bacon cheeseburger. It adds a smoky and salty flavour that complements the beef and cheese. The bacon is usually cooked until it is crispy and then placed on top of the beef patty.

Cheese: Various kinds of cheese can be used in a bacon cheeseburger, with cheddar and American cheese being popular choices. The cheese is placed on top of the beef patty and bacon while they are still hot, allowing it to melt and become gooey.

Toppings and condiments: Bacon cheeseburgers can be customized with a range of toppings and condiments to suit individual preferences.

Common choices include lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and barbecue sauce. These ingredients add freshness, crunch, and additional flavours to the burger.

The bacon cheeseburger is typically assembled by placing the cooked beef patty on a bun, adding the melted cheese and bacon on top, and then layering the desired toppings and condiments. The bun is often toasted or grilled to add texture and flavour.

Bacon cheeseburgers are known for their hearty and indulgent nature. They offer a combination of savoury, smoky, and cheesy flavours, making them a favourite among burger enthusiasts.

They can be found on the menus of many fast-food chains, casual dining restaurants, and burger joints, and are also popular for home grilling and barbecues.

Brioche burger buns are the way to go! I buy them from ALDI as (in my onion) they are far nicer and cheaper than other supermarkets - I'm just saying.

Cheese

Don't take any notice of me, you can, of course, use whatever cheese you want to but I quite like these Mexicana cheese slices.

Mexicana cheese slices.

In a small bowl mix together the following:

  • ½ a small red onion - very finely chopped
  • 4 mini gherkins - very finely chopped
  • 1 fat clove of garlic - very finely chopped
  • 1 slightly heaped teaspoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon of black pepper

Use a large dish to mix with the beef.

See the recipe card below on how to best do this so it's evenly distributed. Now pour over the egg yolk and fold the mixture with a fork.

Shaping burgers.

Divide into 4 and shape into patties. Cover with cling film and very lightly bash to flatten them.

Homemade burgers in clingfilm.

Wrap each one tightly with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least an hour - this will stop the burgers from falling apart when cooking.

When you're ready to cook, get a large non-stick frying pan on high heat and add a little oil.

Cook the bacon until it's nice and crispy then set aside (wrap in kitchen foil and keep warm. Don't wash the pan - you want that bacony goodness!

Brush the burgers with a bit of oil (skip if you already have enough oil in the pan from cooking the bacon) and season them with a little bit of salt.

Bacon Cheeseburgers

Bacon Cheeseburgers

Probably the BEST Bacon Cheeseburgers out there. Makes 4 thin patties (2 per person).
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 5 MinInactive time: 1 HourTotal time: 1 H & 15 M

Ingredients

For the burgers
  • 500g minced (ground) beef
  • 1 x large egg yolk only - lightly beaten
  • In a small bowl mix together the following:
  • ½ a small red onion - very finely chopped
  • 4 mini gherkins - very finely chopped
  • 1 fat clove of garlic - very finely chopped
  • 1 slightly heaped teaspoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon of black pepper
You will also need
  • a little vegetable oil - to fry
  • 4 rashers of smoked bacon
  • a pinch of salt to season the burgers just before cooking
  • 2 slices of cheese - I used Mexicana cheese (it has jalapeno peppers and chillies running through it)
  • 2 burger buns - sliced
  • a little mayonnaise (optional)
  • Salad: tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and shredded iceberg lettuce

Instructions

Gather and prepare the ingredients
  1. Put the minced beef on a chopping board and using a large knife, chop the mince from left to right and again from top to bottom - this will break up the strands and make it easier to mix evenly with the burger ingredients.
  2. In a large shallow dish sprinkle half of the onion, garlic, and gherkin mixture you made earlier.
  3. Then add half of the minced beef to the dish. Don't add salt as it will make the beef tough while it chills in the fridge.
  4. Add the rest of the onion mixture and the rest of the beef this will ensure the onions, gherkins etc get mixed equally.
  5. Now pour over the egg yolk and fold the mixture with a fork.
  6. Divide equally into 4 balls of the same size, and shape into patties. Cover with cling film and very lightly press to flatten them.
  7. Wrap each one tightly with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least an hour - this will stop the burgers from falling apart when cooking.
Make the salad, set it aside and cover with cling film.
  1. When you're ready to cook, get a large non-stick frying pan on high heat and add a little oil. Cook the bacon until it's nice and crispy then set aside (wrap in kitchen foil and keep warm. Don't wash the pan, you want to keep that bacony goodness.
  2. Brush the burgers with a bit of oil (skip if you already have enough oil in the pan from cooking the bacon) and season them with a little bit of salt.
  3. Put all four patties into the pan and press down on them with a fish slice. Turn them after a few minutes (they won't take long to cook), and brown the other side.
  4. Add a slice of cheese to two of the patties and cover the pan with a lid, making the cheese melt faster.
  5. Spread a little mayonnaise on the bottom of each bun (if using) and add one pattie followed by salad and a rasher of bacon followed by a cheese-topped pattie and another rasher of bacon and finally the top of the bun.
